EVE OF DARKNESS, the first book in the Marked series, by S. J. Day is a completely new and different take on angels, demons, and the eternal struggle between Cain and Abel. Yes. That Cain. Who in the present is a sexy bounty hunter dispatched to take care of unruly Infernals. Enter Eve Hollis, the woman he’s loved since she was a teen. Eve thinks she’s an interior decorator. Come to find out, she’s one of the marked–men and women on the edge, offered a chance at redemption if they become God’s enforcers. From the back of the book:

For Evangeline Hollis, a long-ago fling with a bad boy from th ewrong side of the tracks just became a disaster of biblical proportions. One night with a leather-clad man of mystery has led to a divine punishment: the mark of Cain.

Thrust into a world where sinners are drafted to kill demons, Eve knows her learning curve must be short. A longtime agnostic, she begrudgingly maneuvers through a celestial bureaucracy where she is a valuable but ill-treated pawn. She’s also become the latest point of contention in the oldest case of sibling rivalry in history…

But she’ll worry about all that later. Right now she’s more concerned with learning to kill while staying alive. And saving the soul she’d never quite believed she had.

Yeah. Do I really need to say more? Oh…okay. How about S.J. writes with wicked wit and sizzling charm so that you turn the pages, hungry for the next scene. Cain is hot. Abel is, too, and the world S.J. has created could be right under our noses. She gives us a blunt look into this world of archangels and Infernals and entices us with her compelling plot. To date, there are three Eve books; this one, EVE OF DESTRUCTION and EVE OF CHAOS. The next two are in my TBR bookcase and I’m looking forward to the further adventures of Eve. All three books will make it onto the keeper shelves when I’m done.

I love this series by S J Day . She always has neat names for her characters and her storylines are very different.

I love the way she blends “fact” and fantasy and the whole feud between Cain and Abel. Her characterisations are deep and well-rounded, even her “bit players” like the tengu.

Yet more books to add to my ever growing TBR bookshelf. You are so not helping be stay on track with my book budget.

    • Silver James says:

Sorry. :( And since Justin downloaded the Amazon widget thingy that does the whole “BUT IT NOW” thing? That surely doesn’t help matters. But hey, I figure if I’m gonna be in debt up to my eyebrows over books, I’m gonna drag the rest of you with me! ;)

I really think I would almost go without food before going without books. Just adding more to my list as my book budget allows. Luckily, my library is really pretty great about their selection of romance novels for new-to-me authors.

Unfortunately I’ve never liked the library – comes from being a kid, really liking a book and having to give it back !!! Once I read a book I feel like it’s part of me – but, once I give it back I can’t seem to justify spending money on a new one when I may never read it … again.
Really need to start going again though – don’t have the money I’d like to dedicate to books esp. NTM authors :(
The twist to this book does sound interesting …

    • Silver James says:

I felt that way until I bought some books and ended up giving them away because I never finished them. :( Plus, we ran out of storage room. Now, I’ll check out a book for a NTM author. If I start reading it and like it, then I’ll buy the book and go in search of the back list. If the book is just okay, or I’m not interested, then back it goes to the library, no harm, no foul. :D

I loved this series and actually read all three in a week. I have to admire S.J. Day for tackling the taboo subject of religion and God and doing it without coming off religious. It’s actually quite the opposite. I’m having the hardest time waiting for book four that is no where in site :)

    • Silver James says:

Hi, Fallon. Sorry to be so long in getting back to you. I was out of pocket there for a bit. S.J. did an amazing job of combining the Christian mythos with the Urban Fantasy genre. Eve is so sublimely human and Cain and Abel are…Cain and Abel. I don’t want to put any spoilers in but the way Syl handles angelic politics is amazing.

Thanks for dropping by and I hope you’ll visit again!
