fadetoblack Ya’ll know Leslie Kelly, right? She writes sexy, funny Blaze romances for Harlequin. Her books are fun, flirty and a little outrageous. I’d like to introduce you to Leslie Parrish, her evil twin sister. If you’ve read any of Leslie Kelly’s work, forget everything you know. Fade
to Black
took my breath away. Literally and figuratively. Leslie talks about her plunge into the dark side in this Press Release. She’s also started a NEW BLOG. Fade to Black is schedule for release July 7th. Now that all the “public service” information is out of the way, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Trust me. It is nitty. And gritty. Dark, violent, and filled with details and descriptions that leaves a taste of evil in your mouth. Leslie cooks up a tale of depravity that could be ripped from the headlines. Her characters are real and evocative, layered and tempered by the past and present. I’ve worked with officers like Dean Taggert and Stacey Rhodes. I’ve confronted evil ladled from the same cauldron as the Reaper.

I’m not a reviewer. I read books. And I write them, but that certainly doesn’t make me an expert. I know what I like and occasionally, I find a treat I want to share. This book is billed as a debut novel. In many ways, it is. New name, new series, new genre, but the same attention to story, plot, and characters. Since I’m not a reviewer, I fear I can’t really do justice to this book, but I’ll try. Leslie, you blew me away, lady.

A group of elite FBI special agents has been brought together to form the Cyber Action Team, aka CAT–and they have one mission: to solve Internet-related murders.

From his years in the FBI’s violent crimes unit, Special Agent Dean Taggert has learned firsthand how vicious people can be. But this is the worst he’s ever seen. Eight victims have been murdered, their final moments captured on film and shown on a secret Web site called Satan’s Playground. And a madman who refers to himself as the Reaper is auctioning off their means of death.

When the investigation leads Dean to the small town of Hope Valley, he enlists the help of sexy and capable Sheriff Stacey Rhodes, who’s dealing with secrets of her own. It’s too late to save the latest victim, but Dean and Stacey still have to work fast, because the Reaper’s next auction is about to begin…

From the opening paragraph to the very last sentence, I was drawn into the world of the Reaper and the desperate attempt of a dedicated group of federal agents intent on hunting him down. The Reaper plays in cyberspace. I have a little experience with imaginary worlds on the net, though nothing like the Devil’s Playground, thankfully. I know places like it exist. People like him exist. Leslie conveys the horror of his crimes in chilling prose. She paints his psyche with the finesse of a criminal profiler.

I understand Sheriff Stacey Rhodes–her PTSD, her need to leave behind the real world of “big” crime for the idealized world of her childhood where dealing with punk kids from the high school and stopping to pick up donuts for the office are the busy spots in her day. Special Agent Dean Taggert wears his swagger like the standard issue suit that is the “uniform” of a federal agent. But the depth of this man is real and good and big-hearted. Rather than clash, as so many small-town cops and big-city agents often do, these two fit together like a practiced hand on the well-worn grips of a favorite pistol.

I’m glad I don’t have to give a cover quote for Fade to Black. I don’t have the words to be clever and superlative the way this book deserves. The buffet of light and dark, good and evil, contempt for life and demand for justice brought to the table by Leslie Parrish is rich and satisfying yet still induces goosebumps and a sense of dread. Don’t read it without a night light, but definitely read it!

Jordan Dane, Brenda Novak, Allison Brennan, as much as I enjoy ya’ll…move over. Leslie Parrish is going to be an author to reckon with. Leslie? Thank you for the honor of being one of the first to read Fade to Black (and it was an honor!). I can’t wait for Pitch Black and other books of the Black CATs that follow! (And FYI, I didn’t know who the killer was until Leslie revealed the identity! This is a rare and much appreciated benefit.)

*sigh* Just one more book to throw onto the TBR mountain. If you don’t hear from me one day someone come check on me to make sure I’m not suffocating under my TBR pile. :D

  2. ban says:

is it out yet ? i’m gonna have to go get me a copy … and pray someday, if i ever finish my book, you give it as glowing a review :D

  3. Kira Daniels says:

Wow! What an awesome review! I personally don’t read this type of novel, but I do know people who do, and I will recommend this to her. She loves thrillers!
And way to go Leslie Parrish!

    • Silver James says:

Please do, Kira! I…wow. I tend to prefer “dark” and while I love the Leslie Kelly books, Leslie Parrish goes places that just astound me. She is an extremely talented writer and I’m just sorry she didn’t get the chance to do suspense before now!

  4. Wow, Silver, I’m stunned and overwhelmed!

This review truly made my week and the week has just started. I think you know I have everything riding on this new career direction. I’ve been holding my breath for months wondering how it’s going to pan out, and yours is only the 2nd review I’ve received. All I can say is hitting this one out of the ballpark for you, an avid suspense reader with the criminal justice background you have, is a HUGE thrill.

    So thanks very very much!

    • Silver James says:

No thanks needed, Leslie! I…wow. I want to write like you when I grow up! Seriously.

You bring the best of both the Suspense and Romance genres to this book. I can’t imagine that it won’t be a hit. I just wish my little corner of cyperspace was big enough to truly shout the virtues of this book from the rooftops!

The people who hang out here a lot will tell you that I tend to gush over the books I review. That’s mostly true because I don’t discuss books here that I didn’t enjoy. That said, I promised you an honest review when you sent the ARC. I meant every word.

  5. Julie Leto says:

Silver wrote: while I love the Leslie Kelly books, Leslie Parrish goes places that just astound me.

Amen!! I’ve read all three and they totally ROCK.

    • Silver James says:

I can’t wait for the next two! As much as I enjoy Leslie’s romances, I really wish she’d gotten the chance to explore this side of her talent sooner.

And speaking of, Ms. Leto, you have a new one coming out which I’ve also got preordered! Just sayin’…

      • Erika says:

I love Julie Leto books. How do you get to know these women so well that you get ARCs? I am beyond jealous!

        • ban says:

          yeah, sign me up !

        • Silver James says:

I wish I was on their regular ARC list. LOL. I’m not. I have to preorder and get in the mail just like the other squeeing fangirls out there. Leslie’s ARC was a little different. I hang out over at the Plotmonkeys and she offered one in a contest, provided the winner would blog about it. I won! w00t!

          • Erika says:

AH, so it was shameless self promotion on her part that got you the ARC…good idea. I’m going to have to remember that one. I used to hang out at Plot Monkeys but now there’s too many people. When you get too popular I’m going to ditch you too. (JUST KIDDING!!!) :D

            • Silver James says:

Hey, if my publisher did ARCs, I’d be shamelessly self-promoting, too! ;)

And thanks a lot. I’ll remember that when your turn comes. Paybacks are hell. There will be no more brunch for you if you do! Just sayin’….

            • Hey, there’s never too many in the jungle. Come on back! :-)

And self promotion is pretty much the only promotion for midlist authors these days. Sigh.

          • Well, this is the first time I’ve ever had a publisher actually do ARCs for me, too, Silver! I think I got about a dozen. I squeed when they showed up, too…lol!

            • Silver James says:

*grin* I can imagine. I’m just thrilled that TWRP offers both ebooks and print. I may not be able to walk into a bookstore and see Faerie Fate on the shelf, but I’ll be able to click on B&N and Amazon to see it! Ebooks are available from the publisher’s site so that’s easy! And I do get one print copy of my very own. I’ll probably sleep with it. LOL! ;)

  6. “Fade to Black” and “Pitch Black” blew me away and did an exceedingly rare thing: turned me into a squeeing fangirl! If you like romance and serial killer mysteries, these books are the PERFECT combo of both.

    • Silver James says:

I’m right there with you squeeeing, Heather. Not to mention how jealous I am that you’ve read them all! That’s okay. I fully intend on buying all them when they come out! Definitely going on the keeper shelf.

  7. Hahaha…Heather’s being the 1st review of this book!! Thanks again Heather! (I imagine the ARC of Black At Heart will be showing up from my publisher soon. Hope you like that one, too. It’s a bit different, and I’m very anxious to hear your opinion!)

Just FWIW, the two of you have given me more energy than you can possibly know! Writing can be such a soul-draining thing, every bit of positive reinforcement is tremendously appreciated!

    • Silver James says:

*hugs* You aren’t writing in a void, Leslie, even though all of us who write feel that way. A lot! You’ve got fans out here and our numbers are growing by leaps and bounds.

    • *does excited happy dance in expectation of reading the third book*

I’m so glad to hear it! Though I’m always determined to say what I think of a book, for good or ill, and do so, it’s so nice when I can honestly tell an author that I loved his or her work. It’s much more fun than when I have to say I didn’t enjoy something! And, well, it’s a lot more fun to do the reading! Here’s to a long and lucrative career for you, Leslie!

  8. ev says:

Well I have already said I would be buying them no matter what. I love the “other” Leslie books so I can’t imagine not liking these, although I will be buying them in MM instead of on digital. There are just certain authors that have to be in paperback. hell, I might buy it in both formats anyway.

I would say remind us again around July 7th, but I imagine at Plotmonkeys, we will get lots of them. And Bruce’s tweets too. LOL

    • Silver James says:

Oh, I definitely will! I’m gonna keep hounding G until he reads this book, too. It’s an amazing crime suspense and so opposite in “feel” to Leslie’s light stuff.

  9. Liza says:

Silver, you are so lucky to have read Fade to Black already. I was so hoping to win the ARC and can’t wait to read it on July 7th. I love books that I don’t figure out the bad guy until the end.

BTW, I posted all of the news I learned about the BDB on Alannah’s blog today. Let me know if you have any other questions, I posted the big stuff she answered, but there might be little stuff that I forgot to post.

  10. Paula R. says:

Silver, this was an awesome review of Les’ book…if I hadn’t known about it or read an excerpt I would have wanted to read it based on this review. You say you are not a reviewer, but you really are. Les is a wonderful writer, and when I read the excerpt for F2B, I was hooked…I can’t wait for my copy to get here…I am so jealous of you and the others that got to read it already. Like you, I want to be able to write like Les when I grow up…see you in the jungle…

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

    • Silver James says:

Hi, Paula! Welcome to my little corner of the net. I hope you’ll stop by again soon. Thank you for your kind words. I’m just a writer who likes to read, especially books like this one. Les is an amazing talent! July is just around the corner and F2B will be in your mailbox before you know it!
